High Flyer

High Flyer by Susan Williams, digital media

This work is part of the ‘Beyond’ series, playing with the idea of photographing the non-subject, the spaces that aren’t anchored or aren’t anything specific, that are beyond the subject/object as an experiment, having already established a process of mirroring a single image in different ways.  This image is actually the first one I took.  It focussed on the space above a nearby tree causing me to bend so far back in order to avoid depicting the actual tree that it unexpectedly caught the top of the chimney of the house behind me.  Further manipulation using rotation and inversion, revealed unexpected perspectives opening conversations about strangeness in this ordinary world, focussed on the presence of the bird-like chair-like chimney that suggested something was on the cusp of happening, that something wasn’t quite right and was woven into this displaced world.
